CONSERVATION OF MUSK DEER IN GREATER DACHIGAM OF KASHMIR HIMALAYA - IN SITU PERSPECTIVES

Mudasir-Ali and G.A. Bhat

Abstract

This communication highlights the in situ conservation significance for the musk deer in general and provides an impetus towards the in situ conservation potential by a virgin landmass adjoining to a National Park (Dachigam National Park, area-141 km2), the concept being called as Greater Dachigam. The proposed “Greater Dachigam” plan which shall have an approximate area of about 1800 sq. km. can aid the in-situ conservation planning for the musk deer. This important concept can also be significant in unblocking the migration corridors for the endangered Kashmir red deer– a Miocene survivor at the edge of extinction.
