AHMAD ASHFAQ

Abstract

With a rapid increase in population and improved living standards, the pressure on water resources is increasing day-by-day. A vast majority of groundwater quality problems are caused by contamination, over-exploitation, or combination of the two. According to estimates, it accounts for nearly 80% of the rural domestic water needs, and 50% of the urban water needs. Groundwater is used intensively for irrigation and industrial purposes. Safe water for all can only be assured when access, sustainability and equity can be guaranteed. This paper discusses the various groundwater problems in India, their sources, factors responsible for groundwater pollution, problems due to overexploitation of groundwater and the remedial measures to overcome this disaster.
