Abstract

Certain marine algae from the rocky shore of Visakhapatnam have been screened for their an tinticrobial activity by disc diffusion method. The algae tested in this study %vete Lllutfusciata. Gnu-dans cornea's', Sargassum species, En leromorpha species, Padina lefraslromalica. Spongomorpha nun. and Amphiroa frosilissinta. The crude extract of Sargasso., species at 5 mg concentration formed zone of inhibition ranging frost 10-15 rnm against the microorganisms used, Salmonella typhnnuniunt and Y rms./incm with highest zone and Candid, albicans with lowest zone indicating that this extract was more effective. against S. fyphimurium, Y. enierocolitica and less effective against C albicans. Enna fasciatain most effective awls( Bacillus sublilis forming 22 moo zone of inhibition and also towards Y enterocolnna forming 20 non zone of inhibition. The crude extract, of other algae were not very effective against other microorganisms tested.
