EFFECTIVE UTILIZATION OF FLY ASH AND ITS IMPACT ON WHEAT CROP: AN ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT STRATEGY FOR THE DISPOSAL OF SOLID WASTE

M.R. YAVARZADEH1 AND H. SHAMSADINI

Abstract

In the past 20 years, municipal solid waste policies have changed in response to societal and Environmental changes. Municipal solid waste policies in many countries have become more complicated and numerous. Fly ash (FA) is abundantly available as the by product of thermal power plants, which leads to major environmental problems. For effective and safe management of fly ash, it was used as soil amendment along with recommended doses of N, P, K and vermicompost (VC) for the cultivation of wheat. A field experiment was conducted to study the impact of fly ash and vermicompost on growth and yield of wheat (cv. NIAW-301) during rabi 2006. The experiment comprised of 14 treatments with two replications and laid in randomized block design. The treatments were combinations of recommended dose of NPK, FYM, vermicompost and fly ash. The results exhibited that the application of recommended dose of NPK + FYM 10 t ha-1 was found significantly superior for grain yield and yield parameters of wheat and also found better for maintaining soil health. However, this treatment was at par with NPK + vermicompost + fly ash combination for all the characters studied. The application of fly ash @ 100 t ha-1 along with recommended dose of NPK found superior over recommended dose of NPK to wheat crop and for soil properties also.
