STUDIES ON BIOCHEMICAL AND ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITIES OF RED ALGAE OF VISAKHAPATNAM SEACOASTS.V. RAJAGOPAL, T.M. RADHAKRISHNAN AND B. VENKATA RAMANAbstract Biochemical and antibacterial activities were investigated with the crude extracts of four red algal species viz., Amphiroa fragilissima, Gelidiopsis variabilis, Gracilaria corticata and Hypnea muciformis to evaluate the total carbohydrate, protein and lipid content and their antibacterial activity against gram positive and gram negative bacteria. Carbohydrate content was found to be high in Gracilaria corticata whereas, protein and lipid content were high in Hypnea rnuciformis. Chloroform-methanol, n-butanol and diethyl ether extracts of all four red algal species showed different levels of antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis.
