Abstract

Loktak lake of Manipur, a fresh water environment with floating islands, one of the unique habitat of its kind was investigated as a source of bacteria to screen for the production of novel bioactive compounds. A tott- ] of 24 bacteria with distinct characteristic features were isolated from the soil samples by plating on Nutrient agar medium. The centrifuged cell free culture filtrate was studied for antimicrobial activity against test microorganisms such as E.coli, Ylebsiella pneurrwniae, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aura, Prote-us vulgaris, Can.dida albicans, Fu.sarium moniliforme by employing Agar cup diffusion method. It was observed that 7 isolates exhibited antimicrobial activity, of these, 6 isolates showed both antibacterial as well as antifungal activity while one isolate showed antibacterial activity only. The culture filtrate of isolate no. B 24 showed maximum inhibition zone (20 mm) in case of S.aureus and second maximum in case of Candida albicans (34 mm) when compare to other isolates.
