RESPONSE OF WITHANIA SOMNIFERA (DURAL) TO PHOSPHORUS AND VESICULAR ARBUSCULAR MYCORRHIZAL FUNGIT. VIJAYA AND A. SANDHYAAbstract A glass house trail was established to test the effectiveness of a species of VAM fungi, Glomus fasciculatum extracted from the hill area on Tirumala, on the growth of Withania somnifera for 6 phosphorous (P) rates (0, 5, 10, 25, 75, 225 mg/kg). Wit hania somnifera plants that received VAM colonization exhibited enhanced P uptake, improved dry weight production and higher index tissue P concentration than those without VAM. There was 28% dry weight increase with VAM when 5 mg P/kg was added, but there was a significant (P<0.005) reduction in the case of 225 mg P /kg. VAM colonization was least at the higher P application for VAM treated plants than that of plants without VAM.
