Abstract

Terminalia catappa L. (tropical almond), of Combretaceae family is a large deciduous tree, originally from India. It thrives as an ornamental tree in many tropical cities of the world. The present work highlights the antibacterial property of Methanol-HC1, Methanolic, Ethanolic extract of Terminalia catappa fruits (Mesocarp Pericarp). The antibacterial testing was carried out by "Disc diffusion method". The test bacteria used for this study were, Gram positive bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 3750, Staphylococcus aureus (Coagulase positive), Bacillus subtilis var. niger ATCC 9372, and Gram negative organisms like Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris and Salmonella typhi. Amongst the tested three extracts, Methanol-HCI, showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (Coagulase positive) only. Methanolic extract showed antibacterial activity against Proteus vulgaris only. While Ethanolic extract showed antibacterial activity against, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 3750, Proteus vulgaris and Salmonella typhi.
