Abstract

Fishes were collected from the Vellar estuary (Lat.llĀ° 29'N, Long. 790 46E), lying along the southeast coast of India for qualitative and quantitative study of actinomycetes isolated from different parts viz. foregut, midgut and hindgut of the alimentary canal. Among the three parts, the foregut and midgut harboured maximum population density of actinomycetes. A total of 40 strains isolated from the fishes were tested for their antagonistic activity against the potential human pathogens, among them, 10 isolates (25%) showed little antagonistic activity. Some of the isolates also possessed extracellular enzymatic activities. Such potential strains were identified based on the morphological, micromorphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics.
