IN VITRO MULTIPLE TUBER FORMATION AND DIRECT PLANT REGENERATION IN GLORIOSA SUPERBA

P. BHARATHP, D. PHILOMINA2 AND P. AGASTIAN

Abstract

The in vitro propagation of Gloriosa superba for multiple tuber formation and direct plant regeneration was studied. Callus induction and multiple tuber formation was obtained in Murashige and skoog medium supplemented with Benzyl Amino Purine (1mg.1-1) and Naphthalene Acetic Acid (2mg.1-1). Tuber formation was greater when callus from cormlets was transferred to induction medium rather than by subculturing the existing tubers. Direct shoot regeneration was achieved when cormlets were cultured on Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with kinetin and Indole Butyric Acid at a concentration of 1 mg I-1 each.
