Abstract

A study of surface water of Irai river has been carried out to investigate its suitability for drinking purpose on the basis of some physical parameters viz. Temperature, Conductivity, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and Turbidity. For the analysis of these physical aspects, water samples were collected from four sampling stations fortnightly for the period of two years in the stretch of 23 kms of Irai river.Present study reveals that values of conductivity and turbidity were found above the permissible limit of WHO at Sampling Station B (located near the junction of channel coming from Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station), Sampling Station C (Near the road bridge coming from Ramnagar and water supply pumping station) and Sampling Station D (Near junction of channel coming from MIDC). However, values of turbidity were above the permissible limit at Sampling Station B throughout the year and during winter at Sampling Station D. At Sampling Station A (Dam Site) values of all physical parameter were within the permissible limit. So it is clear that industrial pollutants play vital role in depleting potable quality of Irai river water.
