R. ANAND, S. MURUGAN AND K. BHUVANESWARI

Abstract

Thirty five samples were collected from patients from a renowned notorious skin clinic, among which 13 infected cases wee identified with the help of microscopic and macroscopic observations. The etiological agents include Trichopyton tons urans, T.violaceum, Microsporum gypseum and Epidermophyton floccosum. The infected patients wee classified on the basis of their occupation. Medicinal plant extracts were prepared by cold percolation method and challenged against 6 dermatophytic isolates, which showed the antifungal effect of Curcuma longa against Trichophyton rubrum and Microsporum gypseum. These two organisms were found to be resistant towards other plant extracts namely Acalypha indica and Anona sqamosa. The other four dermatophytes were resistant to all medicinal plant extracts tested.
