B. DHAL AND H.N. THATOI

Abstract

The present study was conducted in Post-Graduate Department of Biotechnology, North Orissa University, Orissa with a view to isolate and characterize the bacterial microflora present in the chromite mine area soil. In total, six soil samples were collected from different locations such as mining site, old overburden dumps and its adjacent areas of Boula-Nuasahi chromite mine of Orissa during June-2005. Isolation of the bacterial strains was done by dilution plate technique continued by three tier screening processes such as morphological studies, microscopic studies and biochemical characterization. The identification of strains was done with help of Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology. In total six species of bacterial strains viz., two species of Micrococcus, one species of Stomatococcus, Pseudomonas, Planococcus, and Enterobacter each were identified from collected soil samples. Physiological responses were also studied for these strains in different pH and antibiotic conditions. These strains will be further screened for their role in bioremediation of heavy metals from polluted environment and bio-leaching of minerals form ores.
