METALLOPHYTES:: AN INTEGRATED APPROACH FOR CLEANING THE COAL MINING CONTAMINATED LANDS

KUMAR

Abstract

Industrial revolution has resulted in large-scale destruction of natural areas. Mining of metal and non-metal heavily altered ecosystems has been left behind. Contamination at these sites is of global concern. Restoration strategy is needed to minimize the overall impact. Traditional engineering approaches rely on cost-intensive techniques such as excavation and land filling, soil washing, thermal treatment and electroreclamation. Emphasis given to build organic matter, nutrients and vegetation cover to accelerate natural recovery as a part of bio-restoration used as tool to restore fertility and recover the contaminated land. By screening the appropriated native, indigenous, cultivated or transgenic plant species having metal absorbing capacity (metallophytes), which is economical and environmentally sustainable. In this paper, metallophytes with its importance and constraint has been briefly discussed.
