SCREENING OF THIRTY EIGHT MEDICINAL PLANTS OF BANGLADESH FOR ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITIESM.N. ANWAR, JARIPA BEGUM, SHOMA DUTTA S. KHAN, MD.YUSUF AND J.U. CHOUDHURYAbstract Antibacterial assays of ethanolic extracts of thirty eight medicinal plants have been tested against ten human bacterial pathogens (Bacillus subtilis, B.cereus, B.megateium, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Shigella dysenteriae, Sh.sonnei, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Vibrio cholerae). Varied degree of inhibitions of test bacteria were recorded. Out of thirty eight plant species, the extract of eight species showed inhibition against all the test bacteria. The extract of four plant species (aerial parts of Dioscoria sp. and Cissus repens; bark of Sapium indicum and Saraca asoca) showed inability to inhibit any test bacteria.
