Abstract

Of all the different ways in which the industrialized world's use of energy can damage the natural environment, the most vivid is oil spill. In recent years, methods of biological remediation of oil- contaminated soils have become more significant due to their ecological safety. Rhoclococcus, one of the best hydrocarbon oil degrader was used in the present study. The ability of degradation was determined after isolation of it from various automobile service stations. The biomass, surfactant, emulsification activity of strains was analyzed and degradation potential was determined on different percentage of crude oil and for different periods. From the GC-MS studies it is inferred that Rhodococcus rhodochrous showed the maximum degradation of the major compounds found in the crude oil.
