Abstract

It is known that infectious diseases occurring as epidemics have affected shrimp production in India. The occurrence of disease is probably due to the complex interaction between the host species, disease causing organisms and the environment. A study was conducted to know the occurrence of microbial diseases in shrimp ponds of Penaeus rnonodon in Pecidapatnam village, Andhra Pradesh, India. In the present study, viral, bacterial, protozoan and ecological diseases were observed in the shrimp ponds. The disease outbreaks were more in September and October during the culture period. The studies recorded white spot syndrome, black spot disease, protozoan disease and loose shell disease. Mortality of cultured shrimp due to white spot syndrome, black spot disease has been observed. Factors which account for disease prevalence include salinity of water, water exchange rate, low levels of dissolved oxygen and feed consumption of shrimp.
