STUDIES ON CO-RELATION BETWEEN ALGAE AND PHYSICO- CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS FROM MULA RIVER, PUNE-INDIA

N. Jafari Ghavzan and V.R. Gunale

Abstract

The physico-chemical parameters with special references to phytoplankton in fresh water bodies of Mula river situated in Pune city (Maharashtra-India) were investigated for a period of one year from October 2004 to September 2005. Algal and water samples were collected at monthly intervals from four locations of river. The main purpose of this study was to document relationships among nutrient concentrations with phytoplankton distribution and composition. The correlation coefficient study between physicochemical parameters and phytoplankton population of river are significantly associated with most of the physico-chemical characteristic. From the results, it is evident that the Mula river water is eutrophicated with high values of BOD, COD, chloride, phosphate, nitrate, sulphate, free CO,and was dominated by the members of Oscillatoria, Lyngbya, Anabena, Microcystis, Navicu la, Nitzschia, Synedra, Gomphonema, Eugkna, Pandorina, Stigeoclonium etc. Investigation showed increasing stress from downstream of river and grossly polluted with untreated domestic sewage and partially industrial waste.
