IMPACT OF TOBACCO SMOKING, CHEWING AND GUTKHA ON ORAL CANCERS IN THE SLUM DWELLERS OF VISAKHAPATNAM

Abstract

The impact of tobacco smoking, alcoholism, chewing of tobacco and gutkha by slum dwellers of Visakhapatnam has been evaluated in the present study. Oral cancer and pre-cancerous lesions were observed in the victims. Five slum areas such as Jalaripeta, Arilova, Gollaveedhi, Perikiveedhi and Sewage farm have been screened. Thirty six people in each slum were examined for oral cancer. The oral cancers and pre-cancerous lesions were more prevalent in cigar smokers than tobacco and gutkha chewers. This article deals with the percentage of cancer victims due to various habits.
