Abstract

Vermicompost produced from cow manure (CV), were substituted at a range of different concentration Into a soil-less bedding plant container medium, peat: peril( (2:1), to evaluate their effects on the growth of Dieffenbachia (Dieffenbachia. amoena) in the greenhouse. Dieffrnbachia was grown in container medium P: P (2:1), substituted with 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and -100% (by volume) CV. Tlw control consisted of P: P (2:1) alone with out CV. Plants were frequently treated with a nutrient solution for six month. The greatest growth of Dieffenbachia plant resulted from substitution of P: P (2:1) with 50% CV and tlw lowest growth was in the potting mixtures containing 100% vermicompost. There were positive correlations between the increases in Dieffenbachia growth and the concentrations of nitrogen in leave tissue of Hilfrnbachia. Some of the Dili?nbachia growth enhancement, resulting from substitution of P: P (2:1) with CV may be explained by nutritional factors; however, other factors, such as plant-growth factors, might have also been involved since all plants were supplied with nutrients.
