OBSERVATIONS OF THE INDICES OF FECUNDITY OF THE MUDSKIPPER, PERIOPHTHALMUS BARBARUS (GOBIIDAE) IN THE QUA LBOE RIVER ESTUARY SOUTHEASTEN NIGERIA

Mfon T. Udo, Anthony W. Akpan and Alice. Ekwu

Abstract

The fecundity (absolute, standard, relative) of the mudskipper Periophthalmus barbarus including its coefficient of maturity and reproductive correlates are worked out. The equation on the total length - fecundity relationship gives reliable fecundity estimates. There were positive correlation between fecundity and length (total, standard, ovary) and weight (body, somatic, ovary, total eggs) but inversely correlated with individual egg weight. Regressions between fecundity and reproductive correlates (gonadosomatric index and condition factor) indicate positive and negative correlations respectively. Relationship between fecundity and manifestation of ageing is reported as an adaptation to the ecological factors in the Qua Iboe estuary, calling this along with the amphibious and morphological adaptations of the mudskipper, as "bio - ecomophological adaptation".
