CONTRAST EFFECTS OF TEMPERATURE AND REDOX POTENTIAL ON THE BIOLOGY OF THE SAGAR LAKE

N.C. AGRAWAL, V.S. BAIS AND S.N. SHUKLA

Abstract

The present investigation was carried out from November, 1988 to October, 1989 in the Sagar Lake to take into consideration the effects of temperature and redox potential on the biological factors of water like total phytoplankton, total chlorophyll content and phytoplankton productivity. When the values of temperature and redox potential were high and low respectively, almost all the values of biological factors were found high at all the stations during summer when compared the values obtained during winter and summer season. Similar results were also recorded when the values compared obtained during winter and rainy seasons. However, the values of biological factors were found low during rainy season when the values recorded during summer and rainy seasons were compared. Coefficients of correlation of temperature and redox potential with biological factors calculated were found positive and negative respectively. A negative correlation was noted between temperature and redox potential (r = -0.93, P < 0.001).It was concluded that temperature has direct effect on the biology of the lake whereas redox potential has indirect effect.
