CARP SEED STANDARDIZATION N ND IA : PRESENT TRENDS AND PROPOSALS FOR FURTHER IMPROVEMENT

Arvind Mishra and A.K. Singh

Abstract

Aquaculture till the mid 50's was exclusively dependent on supply of fish seed from natural resources. However, the dependence on natural sources for supply of seed hampered because of non-availability of adequate quality fish seed. With the advent of modern technology of induced breeding and related infrastructure facilities for spawning of Indian major carps and Chinese exotic carps the country's fish seed production has constantly been increasing. The fish seed production in the private sector has also been catching up in many states including Uttar Pradesh. However lack of the adoption of genetic methods of brood stock improvement is the major impediment in the production of quality fish seed. This paper illustrates the present trends of carp seed standardization and proposals for its further improvement in India.
