METAL TOLERANCE OF EXTREMELY HALOPHILIC BACTERIA ISOLATED FROM ESTUARIES OF GOA, INDIA

S. Khandavilli, F. Sequeira and I. Furtado

Abstract

Twelve halophilic estuarine bacteria, grew as orange red cultures in NTYE medium containing 5-25% crude salt. Each was unaffected by 1 mM; 50 mM; 100 mM and 0.02 mM concentrations of Fe+2/Fe+3.; Mn+2, Li + and lig+2 respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentrations to Ha/obacterium strain R, MTCC 3265 corresponded to 200 mM; 60 mM; 50 mM; 5 mM; 2.5 mM; 1 mM and 0.02 mM for Li; As+5; Mrit2; Ni+2; Cu-2; Zn+2/Cd'2/Fe+21 Fe+3 and Hg+2 respectively. Spectral analysis of pigments of individual cultures showed absorption maxima in the region of 300, 400 and 500 mm. Cells grown in NGSM with metal ion were mauve and increased in their affinity for hydrophobic hexadecane.
