HYDROCHEMISTRY OF GROUND WATERS OF SOUTHERN PUNJAB, INDIA IN RELATION TO THEIR SUITABILITY FOR IRRIGATION

L.B. Patel, V.K. Verma, G.S. Toor and P.K. Sharma

Abstract

A systematic study was conducted to ascertain the hydrochemistry of ground waters of Mansa district, in relation to their suitability for irrigation. The ground water samples were collected and analysed for various chemical constituents. Based on major cation and anion content of ground water, five hydrochemical fades have been identified. Majority of ground water samples occur as Na+— HC0-3 — S02-4 - S02-4 — cr facies. The study indicates that the continuous use of these waters will cause salinity, alkalinity and sodicity hazards in soils.
