HYPOGLYCEMIC EFFECT OF LEAF EXTRACT OF C CCINIA INDICA ON THE DIABETIC MICEV. D. Sonawane and M. T. HyalijAbstract Alloxaon induced diabetic albino mice were used to evalute potential antidiabetic or hypolygycemic effect of crude leaf extract of Coccinia indica. The effective dose was 2 gm/kg body weight given by oral feeding. The results were compared and verified with insulin treated group to confirm hypoglycemic activity. Leaf extract maintained the body weight of the mice near control group (35 0.46 gm.) but significant decrease in weight (26 ± 0.73 gm) in alloxan diabetic mice. The increase in blood sugar (212.5 ± 0.05 mg/100 ml) decrease in liver glycogen (2.2 ± 0.15 gm/l00 ml). Wet weight tissue, muscle glycogen (0.61 ± 0.18 mg/gm) and blood F.F.A. (3.00 ± 12 mg/gm), increase in blood urea (55.0 ± 2.81 mg/ 100 ml) and serum cholesterol (216.6 ± 1.84 mg/I00 ml) in alloxan induced diabetic group which was brought almost to normal level after treatment of crude leaf extract of Coccinia indica showing effective hypoglycemic activity like insulin.
