ISSUE HISTOPATHOLOGY OF G ARBUS'IA AFFINIS (BAIRD AND GIRARD) UNDER DIRNECRORN TOXICITYVeena Sakthivel and S.A. GaikwadAbstract The investigation was undertaken to evaluate the toxicity of Dimecron (Phosphamidon) an organophosphate pesticide used in agriculture. Long term exposure (30 days) to sub lethal concentration 0.0068 ppm of Dimecron on some tissues like alimentary canal, liver, kidney and gill were studied. The observed major changes were hepatic lesions with necrosis, pycnotic nuclei, vacuolation, damaged blood vessels, and accumulation of cytoplasrnic granules in liver. The alimentary canal showed disruption of muscle fibers, ruptured outer layer, vacuolation of epithelial cells, ruptured villi, necrosis of mucosa epithelium, increase in number of goblet cells in villi, pycnotic nuclei in epithelial cells. Kidney showed shrunken and disintegrated glomeruli. Gills showed proliferation of cells in secondary lamellae. The lamellae appeared like swollen bulging sacs (balooning effect) filled with blood cells. Epithelial walls of secondary lamellae seemed to be ruptured.
