STUDIES ON THE MODULATION OF SI!KR TONIN METABOLISM IN THE CHLORPYRIFOS INTOXICATED RATTUS NORVEGICUS CHALLENGED WITH DRUGSV.C. Karunakaran @and S. DurairarAbstract Serotonin (HT), monoamine oxidase (MAO) and hydroxy indole acetic acid (HIAA) were analysed at various time intervals in the brain regions of Rattus norvegicus intoxicated with chlorpyrifos (CP).The heterogeneous trend of HT was reversed to the level found in the control animals by drugs such as atropine, pyridine aldoxime methiodide, reserpine and propranolol. The metabolizing enzyme MAO also found to vary in its activity at 1,2,5, 15 and 24 h. Drugs used in this study provided effective protection against CP toxicity. HIAA, the metabolite of HT, was significantly increased in the CP intoxication. The increased level of HIAA was significantly reduced to the level found in the control brain regions but propranolol and reserpine did not have much impact on HIAA.
