A STUDY OF FOREST FIRE IN BHUTAN WITH RESPECT TO CAUSE, EFFECT AND MEASURES

Abstract

In the paper an attempt has been made to assess the damages that fire has caused in the ecosystems of Bhutan Himalaya The cause, impact, damages and the measures to control are the main concern of this paper. Forest fire in Bhutan has caused enormous damages to biodiversity. In 1999 alone, 29708 acres of the forest was burnt by forest fire resulting in Nu I 48.047 millions loss. Besides revenue, the environmental degradation is an additional wound.Tree can be restored through afforestation and reforestation programme but the epiphytic population such as Orchids and Lichens; and the micro organisms which create a very specialized kind of microclimate suitable for the growth of a very few rare species of Orchids can never be revived. Human being as a major threat has been well recognized.
