DEGREE OF DEACETYLATION OF CHITOSAN : ACETIC ACID DISTILLATION USING SULFURIC ACID

Varad Ravindra Pradhan and Aka N. Bedekar

Abstract

A new method is proposed for determination of the degree of deacetylation of Chitosan. When Chitosan is subjected to react with dilute Sulfuric acid, deacetylation takes place. As a result the Acetic acid which is generated due to acid hydrolysis of Chitosan is distilled out.The distillate is directly titrated with a known concentration of Sodium Hydroxide using Phenolphthalein as an indicator.
