Abstract

Mylara is important pilgrim centre of Karnataka state, situated on the right bank of the river tungabhadra. Every year during the 1st week of february, the river is put under tremendous ecological stress due to the interference of human beings who gather to visit Bharatha Hunnime karnikotsava.About 10 lakh people gather during that time and take their holy bathe in the river. The present investigation deals with the changed physicochemical characteristics of the water during the fair. The water samples were collected at an interval of one hour for 24 hours during the fair and analyzed on the spot for various physicochemical parameters.Air temperature, water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen show a selective pattern of variation. However, alkalinity, chloride and total hardness show irregular pattern of response during the study period.
