Abstract

This paper deals with the water quality aspects and geochemical characteristics of two largest freshwater lake systems of Kerala, namely the Sastharncotta and Vellayani. Even though, some preliminary studies have been conducted in Sathamcotta lake, the scientific studies relating to Vellayani lake are meagre. In the present investigation, an attempt has been made to evaluate the geochemical and water quality parameters as well as the environmental conditions of these two lakes by giving stress to Vellayani lake for its better conservation and management in order to meet the future water demands of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, State, India
