WATER MASS PARAMETERS OF COASTAL AND ESTUARINE ENVIRONMENT, SOUTHEAST COAST OF INDIA

N. Jayaraju and K.R. Reddy

Abstract

Bottom water samples were col lected from different environments of Southeast coast of India, for two seasons viz., Monsoon and Premonsoon. The Physico-chemical parameters have reflected admixed variability in terms ofspace and time. Depth and organic matter were high in monsoon; temperature pH, EC, salinity, dissolved oxygen and calcium and phosphate documented the same trend in premonsoon. More so, the estuarine watermass characters show idea variations with respect to the intertidal and near shore environment. This may be owing to the large influx of the fresh water into the estuaries during monsoon and excessive evaporation during premonsoon coupled with man induced disturbance. The paper attempts to bring about the ecosystem ofboth estuaries and coastal fringe as well towards the furtherence of man's activities for marine food culture and breeding.
