ABIOTIC FEATURES AND DIATOM POPULATION OF WULAR LAKE, KASHMIRS.G. Sarwar and Irfan-UI-MajidAbstract The paper throws light on the abiotic features and diatom population of Wular lake, Kashmir. The investigated lake is of drainage type with permanent inflow and outflow channels. It is calcium rich, well-buffered, alkaline with the sequence of major ions as HCO3- > Ca' > Mg" > Cl. The diatiom community of the lake at the investigated stations comprised of fifty three species representing five centric forms and forty eight pennate types. The most dominant species recorded are Synedra ulna, Navicula spp. and Gomphonerna olivaceum with maximum occurrence during winter and colder months.
