IMPACT OF SUGAI MILLS EFFLUENT ON THE WATER QUALITY AND AQUATIC BIOTA N FT::-AISHAHI, BANGLADESH

Abdullah Harun Chowdhary. A.B.M. Shafiqur Rahman and M. Zaman

Abstract

Physico-chemical conditions of sugar mills effluent and their effects on the water quality and aquatic biota in Rajshahi have been studied during the period from February, '94 to February 1995. Higher TSS and TDS values, lower DO content, high BOD, COD and conductivity values with high Chloride and Oil-grease content indicate a highly polluted condition of water. The phyto and zooplankton abundance have been severely affected by highly polluted condition of water as indicated by their lower abundance values in the study zone. Multiple regression analysis have been made to establish the interrelationships between the physico-chemical and biological conditions.
