BIOABSORPTION OF CADMIUM AND MERCURY BY MUSSEL PERNA VIRIDIS

G. Bhavani and S. Dawood Sharief

Abstract

Bioabsorption of heavy metals were investigated using Perna viridis. Cadmium and mercury were selected for the present study. Lcsa was calculated and acute toxicity studies were carried out on marine bivalve, and the concentration of cadmium and mercury absorbed were determined in the shell and in tissue. In addition to the absorption of metals biochemical components like protein, carbohydrate and lipid were studied. The results reveal the bioabsorption capacity of the bivalv, and the decrease of proteins, carbohydrates and lipids in the body tissue of Perna viridis, due to metal toxicity.
