STUDIES ON VARIABILITY5 CORRELATION AND PATH-COEFFICIENT IN EARLY MATURING POTATO HYBRIDS

D. Sharma and D.A. Sarnaik

Abstract

Seven diverse genotypes of potato were grown to obtain basic information on the variation. Due to the dominance of environment, the PCV were higher than G.C.V. for all the characters. High heritability estimate along with high genetic advance was observed for per cent dry weight of tuber, fresh weight of tubers, shoots and roots per plant. Tubers yield was highly significant and positively correlated with dry weight of roots, dry matter partitioning of roots and fresh weight of roots and tubers per plant while it was negatively correlated with per cent dry weight of shoots and tubers. The path analysis revealed that the fresh weight of tubers per plant, number of leaves per plant and dry weight of roots per plant had maximum positive direct effect on yield. Therefore, emphasis should be given on these characters while selecting good genotypes for improvement of yield in potato.
