VARIABILITY, CORRELATION AND PATH ANALYSIS STUDIES IN POTATO (SOLANUM TUBEROSUM LL)

D. Sharma and D.A. Sarnaik

Abstract

Eight diverse genotypes of potato were grown to obtain basc information on the nature and magnitude of variation. The P.C.V. were higher than G.C.V. for all the characters under study due to dominance of environment. High heritability estimate along with high genetic advance was observed in fresh weight of tubers and shoots, number of leaves per plant and height.Tuber yield was highly significant and positively correlated with plant height, number of leaves and fresh weight of tubers, while it was negatively correlated with per cent dry weight of tuber and dry matter partitioning of tuber. The path analysis revealed that dry weight of tubers and shoots, number of stolons, number of tubers per plant and plant height had maximum positive direct effect on yield. Therefore, emphasis should be given on these characters while selecting good genotypes for improvement of yield in potato.
