Abstract

An investigation was conducted into the bacteria of eutrophic concrete tanks and earthen fish ponds over a six month period. Water samples were collected using sterile screw capped bottles, and microbial load determined using the plate count agar method with trytone soya agar as medium of growth. Standard bacteriological methods were used in the identification of bacteria. The bacterial flora identified were Escherichia coil, Klebsiella spp., Vibrio spp., Streptococcus and Enterococcus spp. It is concluded that these fish rearing environments contain bacteria capable of causing fish mortalities under stressful conditions.
