Abstract

Vermicompost is a method of making compost with the help of the earthworms. Earthworms are considered as biological indicators of soil fertility. They also eliminate pathogens from waste. In the present investigation tendu leaf litter (Diospyros melanoxyion : Roxb.Family.Ebenacae) was used for vermicomposting. Waste leaf litter is thrown as garbage in tons everyday. This enormous amount of leaf garbage has become a serious health problem and environmental hazard. In order to solve this problem, in an eco-friendly and economically profitable manner, an experiment was carried out to convert this biomass into vermicompost. The results are discussed in the light of variation in the different chemical composition of the leaf dry powder and the Verrnicompost. The bioadsorbant nature of tendu leaf is also highlighted.
