ICHTHYOLOGICAL SURVEY OF YEWA LAGOON, OGUN STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

A survey of occurrence and abundance of fish species in Yewa Lagoon was conducted between March 2007 and February 2008 using gill nets of various mesh sizes. Results of the study show that a total of 30 species of the fish fauna belonging to 18 families were encountered.Three families namely Cichlidae (27.4%), Bagridae (11.61%) and polypteridae (8.68%) constituted the dominant fish families in the lagoon while Tilapia zulu, Polypterus senegalensis and Chryscihthys nigrodigitatus were major species. Analysis of variance indicated no significant differences between the dry and wet seasons in fish composition.
