A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF LITNNOCHEMISTRY AND PRIMARY PRODUCTIVITY OF SOME FISH PONDS IN THE NORTHERN DISTRICTS OF WEST BENGAL, INDIA

Abstract

A comparative study of limnochemistry and primary productivity was carried out in four fish ponds in the northern districts of West Bengal from _June to November, 200 I .Water temperature recorded marked differences. The average dissolved oxygen was found to be high in the pond in Puding in Darjeeling district (7.08 mg1-1).The nutrient level was high in the pond in Gajole in MaIda district. The average gross primary productivity was high in Samashpur fish pond in Uttar Dinajpur district (54.07 mgC m-3 hr-1) followed in decreasing order by the ponds in Gajole. Ran inagar (jalpaiguri district ) and Pudung.
