IRON STATUS OF SHALLOW TUBE WELLS AND RECYCLED WATER IRRIGATED SOILS AND ITS IMPACT ON AVALABILITY OF PLANT NUTRIENTS

A.K. Singh, B. Dutta and M. Nath

Abstract

A preliminary study was undertaken to observe the effect of iron rich irrigation water of shallow tube wells (STVVs) on the availability of plant nutrients. The iron content of water, which has enormous influence on the soil quality, was recorded. The observed value of iron content was ranging between 4.63 and 22.92 mg/I. Iron content of STVVs water fed soil was in between 409 and 867 mg kg-'. Besides containing high iron content, a negative correlation was also found between soil iron and soil phosphorus / potassium. Results suggests that continuous use of STWs water in agricultural field may affect the stability of soil aggregates, soil porosity and availability of plant nutrients.
