HYDROGEOLOGY AND QUALITY OF GROUND WATER AROUND HIRAPUR, DISTRICT SAGAR (M.P.) (A CASE STUDY OF PROTEROZOIC ROCKS)

PRAPEEP K. JAIN

Abstract

Geologically thc Hirapur area, Sagar, M.P. India is Covered by Archaeans. Bijawars•, and vindhyans rocks. Hydrogeologically these rocks are compact, hard and massive, therefore, devoid in primary porosity. Due to weathering, Joints and fractures secondary opening may be developed which are main source of water in the area.Chemical analysis was carried out on ground water samples from 22 dug wells situated in different rock formations, analysis indicate that the water is slightly alkaline and hard. The concentration of Na, K, Ca, Mg, HCO3, CO.,, Cl, SO4. NO3, PO, pH and EC are within Drinking water standards of W.H.O. and I.C.M.R.A comparison of water quality data with drinking water standards revealed that the water is suitable for domestic purposes. Determination of Residual sodium Carbonete (RSC), Sodium percentae (Na%), Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR) and Permeability index (31) indicates that the water is suitable for irrigation purpose.
