DYES AS BACTERIAL INHIBITORS: EFFECT ON GROWTH AND ENZYME PRODUCTIOND. VIJAVA LAKSHMI AND M.A. S1NGARA CHARYAAbstract The effect of 10 dyes on the growth and enzyme production of three bacterial species, were evaluated, Crystal violet is considcred to be toxic to these organisms. Methylene blue, bromothvmol blue and criochrome black-T completely suppressed the growth and metabolism of Pseudomonas aeruginosu. Rose-bengal, safranine. earbol tuchsin, completely inhibited the growth of E. cols", while methyl orange suppressed the activity of B. subidis. The production efficiency of bacterial enzymes protease and amylasc were high .vhich ranged from 320 to 9001.tgiml and 350 to 20 respectively. Least activity of catatasc was recorded by these bacterial sps with the effect of all dyes under study.
