BIOCON VERSION OF PROPIONITRILE INTO PROPIONIC ACID

VENKAT HANIDE AND M.S. ANDHALE

Abstract

A bacterium utilizing propionitrile as a sole source of carbon and nitrogen was isolated from soil and identified as Corynebacterium sp. YM-1. The strain could assimilate acetonitrile and acrylonitrile. A metabolite of propionitrile was identified as ammonia and propionic acid. The strain grow best in presence of 0.3% (w/v) propionitrile concentration and at pH 7.0.
