BIOLOGICAL INVASION AND 'RED WATER PHENOMENON IN LAKE MANASBAL OF KASHMIR VALLEY INDIA

M. A. KHAN AND G. H. BHAT

Abstract

The present communication deals with the biological invasion of a protozoan (Euglena perfunculata Gojdics) causing 'red water' phenomenon in a monomictic, mesotrophic Lake Manasbal, Kashmir. The observations conducted during 1995 bloom-phase period (summer-autumn) indicated extensive patches and long streaks of reddish water, largely bordering wide lake shore areas. The seasonal upsurge of bloom- condition has close relationship with warm summer temperature, high nutrient levels of water and multiple anthropogenic perturbations in the lake catchment. The cumulative undesirable environmental impacts render the lake ecosystem susceptible to pollution stress.
