STUDIES ON THE WATER QUALITY INDEX OF RIVER SANAMACHHAKANDANA AT KEONJHAR GARH, ORISSA, INDIABHANJA K. MOHANTA AND AJOY KU. PATRAAbstract The water quality and pollution load of the river Sanamachhakandana of Keonjhar Garh, Orissa was monitored for a period of two years (January, 1990 to December, 1991). The quality of water assessed by testing various physicochemical parameters such as pH, total alkalinity, total hardness, chloride, calcium, magnesium, total solids, dissolved oxygen and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) content. The mean value of water quality index for all the seasons were recorded for three stations (Si, S2. and S3). The studies reveal that potability of the river water is much less than the permissible levels as per the ICMR and WHO (1984 a) standards.
