Abstract

In this paper a review of available work on physico-chemical quality of ground water in industrial areas of zinc smelter plants, ore-inining industries, steel plants, thermal power plants, tanneries, distilleries and heterogeneous group of industries in India has been undertaken. It was due to improper drainage systems, mixing with running water pipe line, septic tanks and solid waste disposal resulted in contamination of ground water by organic chemicals and microorganisms. Similarly the contamination due to inorganic chemicals is mostly by seepage of effluents from industries. It was reported that the concentration of some parameters like colour, hardness, COD, 130D, fluoride, chloride, sulphate, calcium, nitrate, phenols, cyanide etc., in the industrial area was much higher than the permissible limit of WHO (1993) and IS! (1991) drinking water standards.
