Abstract

in the present investigation, impact of domestic wastes carrying heavy metals on the Chemistry of um' river corridor has been studied. Four different nalas were identifed which carry variety of domestic wastes alongwith heavy metals. Analysis of sewage at four different nalas namely - indliyaghat nala, Nala near Clark's Hotal, Orderly Bazar nala and Chaukaghat nab was done during 1998-99. To study the impact of sewage on the Chemistry of Varuna river water, four study sites were selected along the Varuna river corridor to evaluate the impact of sewage on the chemistry of Varuna river water. First one was control site (jansa) i.e. before mixing of any sewage , next two sites were Wind Clark's Hotel and Chaukaghat, where all sorts of domestic wastes are being discharged into tM river, such as soaps, detergents solid waste, household garbage, domestic sewage, run-off water, agricultural pollutants and industrial effluents. Last one was at confluence point (Rajghat). Results iodica te that the sewage discharged into the river increases the temperature, pH, alkalinity BOD, coa chlorides, nitrates, phosphate, potassium, calcium and heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Cr, Fe, Zn, Co, Mn and Pb) content. The dissolved oxygen and transparency decrease due to the mixing of sewage ;filo the river water.
